Iceland Pledges €2 Million to Ukrainian Arms Industry Under the 'Danish Model'
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha welcomed his Icelandic counterpart Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir in Kyiv marking her first official visit to Ukraine in chair, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 7.
During their discussions, the two ministers emphasized Iceland’s ongoing support for Ukraine, particularly in achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. They also agreed on the necessity of further isolating Russia politically and economically and increasing the costs of its aggression.
Sybiha expressed gratitude for Iceland’s diverse support, including demining efforts, logistics, military training, and expedited arms procurement initiatives.
“We are especially thankful for Iceland’s recent contribution of over €2 million toward Ukrainian weapons production under the ‘Danish model.’ We look forward to Iceland increasing its investments in Ukraine’s defense industry,” Sybiha stated.
Ukrainian minister also highlighted Iceland’s efforts to assist wounded Ukrainian soldiers with prosthetics, announcing plans to scale up this program in the coming year to help even more servicemembers recover. Additionally, he thanked Iceland for its energy sector support during the war.
Ms. Þorgerður reaffirmed Iceland’s commitment to aiding Ukraine, including through further financing of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s humanitarian ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, which supplies Ukrainian food to countries in need, such as Syria.
Earlier, Sweden and Denmark announced the joint purchase of CV90 MkIIIC infantry fighting vehicles, 40 of which will be allocated to Ukraine.
