Sweden and Denmark to Provide 40 Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine in $2.3 Billion Arms Deal
Sweden and Denmark announced the joint purchase of CV90 MkIIIC infantry fighting vehicles, 40 of which will be allocated to Ukraine.
The vehicles will be purchased from BAE Systems Hägglunds, the Swedish branch of the UK multinational aerospace, defense and information security company, in a deal worth 25 billion Swedish kronor ($2.3 billion).
The 40 new units are meant to replace the 50 older CV90 units previously given by Sweden to Ukraine.
There is a 20-year gap between the two generations of vehicles. The newer MkIIIC vehicles will have improved firepower, observation, and maneuvering capabilities.
Denmark’s share of the order, which is scheduled for production from 2027 to 2023, will reportedly form an integral part of a mechanized brigade currently being prepared as part of NATO’s joint defense strategy.
The Swedish Minister of Defense, Pål Jonson, stated that the deployment of additional vehicles will contribute to European security.
In November, Denmark announced that it would invest $137 million in Ukraine’s defense industry, signed a series of agreements with Ukraine to purchase weapons from Ukrainian defense companies for $568 million, as well as deliver additional F-16 jets. The same month, Sweden agreed to finance the production of Ukrainian long-range drones under the “Danish model.”
