Kremlin Faults Ukraine Over Peace Talks Deadlock, Hours After Nighttime Terror Attack

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on August 21, following talks in Moscow with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, that Ukraine is openly demonstrating a lack of interest in achieving a sustainable and fair resolution of the war, RIA Novosti reported the same day.
Lavrov claimed that while Russia has repeatedly voiced readiness for dialogue, Kyiv’s leadership “comments on the current situation in a very peculiar way, directly showing that they are not interested in a stable, just and long-term settlement.”
According to him, Moscow continues to support the security guarantees that were discussed in Istanbul in April 2022 on the initiative of the Ukrainian delegation. “Everything else, unilateral, is absolutely futile,” he stressed.

The Russian minister accused Western countries of obstructing potential progress by supplying arms to Ukraine and attempting to impose what he described as “their own scenarios” for resolving the war. He argued that such policies ignore Russia’s security concerns and prevent the launch of meaningful negotiations.
Lavrov’s claim comes just after Russia carried out a large-scale overnight strike against Ukraine, launching drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic Kinzhal missiles in what officials described as one of the most extensive attacks in recent weeks. Nationwide air alerts were declared late at night and lasted into the morning.
Lavrov’s remarks come against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic activity in Washington. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders at the White House to explore the possibility of a peace framework.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledged that Russia is fighting without any allies on the battlefield, and stressed that Moscow must rely on itself while insisting that Ukraine must adopt long-term neutrality, not join NATO, and accept Russia’s territorial claims.
