Ukraine will continue to advance its peace agenda through a focused diplomatic format that includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said in parliament, according to Ukrainian media Ukrinform on May 2.

“Work to promote peace efforts will continue actively, primarily within the established format of 'Ukraine + the United Kingdom, Germany, France + the United States',” Sybiha said.

“Ukraine will not agree to so-called peace at any cost. Our principled positions on the terms for peace remain clear and unchanged.”

Outlining Ukraine’s core positions, Sybiha emphasized that the country will never accept the Russian occupation of any part of its territory, will not agree to any restrictions on its defense forces or defense industry, and will reject any limitations on its sovereignty—including its right to join alliances of its choosing.

Earlier, reports emerged that the United States no longer intends to serve as a mediator in efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Instead, Washington says it is time for Kyiv and Moscow to present their own peace proposals.

The United States remains committed to supporting peace efforts in Ukraine but will reduce its direct role as a mediator, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said during a press briefing on May 1.

“President Trump understands the importance of ending the war through diplomacy,” Bruce said. “But he also recognizes that there’s an entire world that needs attention.”
