Latvia Confirms Readiness to Join NATO's PURL Initiative to Arm Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs on August 8 to discuss NATO’s new initiative to arm Ukraine, PURL , with Latvia confirming its readiness to join.
The leaders also focused on peace efforts and Ukraine’s next diplomatic steps, according to Zelenskyy’s statement on his official Telegram channel.
“Ukraine and all other European countries need reliable peace and a guaranteed future. It’s crucial that we both agree: this can only be achieved with the support of the US and European unity. We have agreed to coordinate efforts,” he emphasized.
“We discussed the European integration path of our country. Ukraine has done everything necessary. It would be fair and just to open the first negotiation cluster for us and Moldova simultaneously. Latvia strongly supports Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO. We greatly value this position,” Zelenskyy wrote.

The United States and NATO have launched a new military aid mechanism, PURL, to fund US weapons through contributions from Alliance members. As part of PURL, the Netherlands has prepared a $545 million assistance package for Ukraine, including components and missiles for the Patriot air defense system. Sweden, Norway, and Denmark will also jointly contribute around $486 million.
Previously, Latvia has delivered a new batch of 1,300 drones to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of its ongoing military support within the multinational drone coalition.
