Major Russian Electronics Plant in Bryansk on Fire
In the early hours of October 19, a series of drone strikes reportedly hit the Russian city of Bryansk, reportedly targeting the Kremnyy EL factory, a key manufacturer of microelectronics for Russia’s defense industry, including components for Iskander missiles.
Russian Telegram channel stating that the facility may have been struck by the drones. Local governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed that 13 Ukrainian drones were allegedly shot down over the region, with another four reportedly intercepted later. These claims cannot be independently verified.
The extent of the damage remains unclear as local authorities have not publicly confirmed any direct impact on the facility.
Strategic importance of Kremnyy EL
The Kremnyy EL factory is one of Russia’s largest producers of military-grade microelectronics and a critical supplier to the Russian military. Defense Express reports that since 2010, the Russian government has allocated $5.5 million annually to the plant’s development. By 2014, the factory had increased its production output eightfold compared to 2000 levels.
The factory participates in the Russian government’s Alternative program and develops advanced radar systems for air defense, aircraft, and naval vessels. It also manufactures components for Russia’s Pantsir air defense systems and Iskander missile complexes.
The significance of the Kremnyy EL factory to Russia’s defense industry is underscored by its wide array of contracts with major military companies such as Almaz-Antey, Aerospace Equipment, Constellation, and Vega. In 2017, 94% of the factory’s output was allocated to defense contracts.
