Merz Declares Europe Is “No Longer at Peace” With Russian Aggression

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared that Europe is “no longer at peace” with Russia, framing Moscow’s ongoing aggression as a direct assault on Western values and unity, Reuters reported on September 29.
“Let me put it in a sentence that may be a little shocking at first glance… we are not at war, but we are no longer at peace either,” Merz said during a media event in Düsseldorf.
The chancellor described Russia’s war on Ukraine as “a war against our democracy and a war against our freedom,” stressing that Moscow’s long-term objective is to fracture the European Union from within.
Merz also pointed to his support for an EU plan to tap frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s defense, saying the mechanism could sustain military aid for “three to five years.”

According to him, such a timeframe could make it economically unsustainable for Russia to keep fighting.
His comments come amid mounting Russian provocations in Europe—including repeated violations of NATO airspace and attempts to interfere in Moldova’s election—developments that have fueled growing alarm in European capitals about the Kremlin’s reach beyond Ukraine.
Earlier, France, Germany, and Sweden announced that they will deploy military personnel and anti-drone systems to Denmark to strengthen security at this week’s European summits in Copenhagen, following recent drone incursions that forced the closure of several Danish airports.
