Moldovan PM Says Russia Fabricated Transnistria Crisis, Praises Ukrainian Armed Forces
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated during a briefing in Chișinău on January 6 that the ongoing energy and humanitarian crisis in Transnistria is tied to Russia's political and military interests, according to European Pravda.
In his speech, the Prime Minister noted the important role played by Ukraine's Armed Forces in maintaining stability across the region.
He emphasized that the current energy crisis in Transnistria appears to be artificially induced.
“Chișinău offered assistance, but this proposal was rejected because Russia needs a fabricated humanitarian crisis,” Recean stated. “Russia controls Transnistria, and they are not allowing anyone to help the region,” he added.
He elaborated on earlier government statements, suggesting that the energy crisis is part of a larger strategy by Russia.
“Russia’s goal is to destabilize the region and, very importantly, to influence Moldova’s elections in the fall. Their aim is to bring in a pro-Russian government, which would ultimately help them strengthen their military presence (illegally stationed in Moldova) and use this leverage, including against Ukraine,” Recean explained.
Earlier, Moldova announced it would stop importing electricity from the Russian-controlled Moldovan Thermal Power Plant in Transnistria starting January 1, 2025, due to the absence of a new contract. The government has prepared alternative plans to meet its energy demands, including boosting domestic power generation, importing electricity from Romania, and implementing energy-saving measures to mitigate potential shortages.
