This morning, a direct commercial flight from Moscow landed in Pyongyang, marking the first such air connection in decades and highlighting the growing partnership between Russia and North Korea, Russian state media service TASS reported on July 28.

According to the flight tracking service FlightRadar24, a Boeing 777 operated by the Russian airline Nordwind Airlines touched down at Pyongyang International Airport at 9:15 a.m. local time.

The plane had departed Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport at 7:30 p.m. the previous evening, with a flight time of roughly eight hours.

State-run Russian news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti confirmed the arrival, calling it a milestone in bilateral cooperation. The Russian delegation on board was led by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Alexander Kozlov.

Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, granted permission for flights between Moscow and Pyongyang in early July. The route will be operated once a month. Tickets were priced at approximately 45,000 rubles—around $510.

North Korean officials and airline staff greeted Russian passengers with flower bouquets. One airport worker is seen taking passengers’ temperatures using an electronic thermometer—a possible nod to remaining COVID-era health protocols.

This newly revived air link underscores the tightening bond between Moscow and Pyongyang, particularly following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. North Korea has since supplied munitions, artillery shells, and even personnel in support of Russia’s war effort.

The return flight from Pyongyang to Moscow is scheduled for Tuesday, according to TASS.

Earlier, reports emerged that North Korea was preparing to send additional troops to Russia as early as August 2025 in a move that could further deepen its military cooperation with Moscow during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
