NATO has officially opened a new Multicorps Land Component Command headquarters in Finland, located roughly 300 kilometers from Russia’s St. Petersburg, Finland’s Ministry of Defense announced on September 1.
The command will initially operate with about 10 personnel but is expected to grow to around 50 staff members over the coming years.
The headquarters will include representatives from across NATO member states, including Finnish military officers.
The Northern Land Component Command is tasked with overseeing allied forces in Northern Europe, coordinating with Finland’s own ground forces, and planning joint training and operational exercises under NATO structures.

Plans for the deployment of multinational NATO forces in Finland were first revealed in February, shortly after Finland joined the Alliance in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb cautioned that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has no intention of ending the war in Ukraine this year, stressing the importance of coordinated international measures to weaken Moscow’s military capacity, ERR reported on August 27.
