North Korea Fires Short-Range Ballistic Missile After US Offer for Talks

North Korea conducted a launch of a ballistic missile on November 7, directing the trajectory toward the sea off its eastern coastline, according to Reuters, citing reports issued by the South Korea and Japan.
This launch followed a series of missile firings over the preceding two weeks and occurred subsequent to the renewed offer for bilateral discussions extended by US President Donald Trump to Pyongyang.
The South Korea's military reported that the projectile, suspected to be a short-range ballistic missile, was launched from an area situated in the DPRK's northwest region near the border with China. The missile was estimated to have traveled a distance of approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles).

Surveillance systems operated by the South Korea and the United States detected the preparations for the launch and tracked the projectile throughout its flight. This collected data was subsequently shared with the government of Japan.
According to Reuters, the Japanese government concurrently reported that North Korea had fired an object assessed to be a ballistic missile, which analysis suggested landed outside of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that no damage reports had been substantiated at the time of the statement.
Meanwhile, the Defense Intelligence Agency of the South Korea has formally assessed that North Korea retains the operational capability to conduct a seventh nuclear test on short notice, pending an explicit directive from leader Kim Jong Un.

Intelligence reports indicate that should the North Korea leadership resolve to utilize the No. 3 tunnel at the Punggye-ri test site, the test could be executed within an abbreviated operational timeline. The DPRK's last subterranean nuclear test was conducted in 2017.
Earlier, North Korea conducted a test of what its government classified as “strategic” sea-to-surface cruise missiles over the Yellow Sea. The launch took place hours preceding the arrival of US President Donald Trump in South Korea for APEC meetings.
