North Korea Warns of “Negative Consequences” Over Upcoming US–South Korea Military Drills

North Korea has threatened the United States and South Korea over planned military exercises, warning of “negative consequences.”
This was reported by the North’s state-run news agency KCNA on August 11.
According to the North Korea Defense Minister No Kwang Chol, the upcoming joint drills between South Korea and the US pose a serious challenge and could further destabilize the already tense situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Pyongyang considers the exercises a key factor in worsening regional security and argues that military pressure on the North Korea will ultimately backfire, reducing security for both Washington and Seoul.

“The armed forces of the DPRK will cope with the war drills…and resolute counteraction posture and strictly exercise the sovereign right of the DPRK at the level of the right to self-defense in a case of any provocation going beyond the boundary line,” the statement reads.
The US and South Korea plan to hold their annual summer drills, “Ulji Freedom Shield,” which are scheduled to run from August 18.
Earlier, it was reported that a direct commercial flight from Moscow arrived in Pyongyang—the first such route in decades—underscoring the deepening partnership between Russia and North Korea.
