Poland Deploys South Korean K2 Black Panther Tanks Along Russian Border
Poland has deployed its first K2 tanks from South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem to the 9th Armored Cavalry Brigade, stationed in Braniewo, just a few kilometers from Russia’s Kaliningrad region, said a spokesperson for Poland’s 16th Pomeranian Mechanized Division, in a comment for Polish news agency, reported European Pravda on November 14.
Arriving on trailers, the tanks are undergoing final formalities for acceptance, with military officials and South Korean representatives expected to conclude the process by the end of the day.
“The next step will involve outfitting the tanks with communication and other systems used by the Polish army,” the spokesperson added.
Renowned for their advanced technological features, the K2 Black Panther tanks are equipped with active protection systems to counter missile and anti-tank attacks.
They also boast high mobility, allowing them to maneuver quickly in challenging terrains like marshlands and sandy areas. Precision targeting and fire-control systems further ensure effectiveness in diverse combat environments.
“The 9th Brigade received 7 tanks in this first batch, with another delivery expected by the end of this year. The unit now has 8 trained crews who completed training with instructors from the 20th Mechanized Brigade,” the spokesperson said.
In August 2022, Poland and South Korea signed a contract for the acquisition of the first 180 K2 tanks, with a total value nearing $3.4 billion.
In addition, the United States opened a new missile defense base in Redzikowo, a town in northern Poland near the Baltic Sea.
