Poland is preparing to transfer up to nine of its ageing MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a deal aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s air defenses against Russia, a Polish deputy Defense Minister told TVP World on January 14.

Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed that Warsaw has already approved the move. “The decision [of the government] has been made,” he said.

The potential transfer involves Soviet-era MiG-29s that Poland has gradually phased out of frontline service.

Military officials previously indicated in December that discussions were underway over a broader arrangement in which Poland would receive Ukrainian-developed drone technologies in exchange for the aircraft.

Zalewski said negotiations with Kyiv are continuing at the technical level. “We are waiting for the answer of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Discussions are ongoing… these are completely technical discussions,” he noted.

When asked whether Ukraine had agreed in principle to accept the offer, Zalewski suggested that Kyiv is already aligned with the proposal. “I believe… Ukrainians made the decision to accept this offer. Of course, there are some technical aspects which shall be clarified, as always,” he added.

According to Zalewski, the first tranche of aircraft would include “less than ten” fighter jets.

The transfer would add to Ukraine’s limited fleet of MiG-29s, which has been kept operational through a combination of domestic maintenance, Western support, and spare parts supplied by former Warsaw Pact countries.

The proposed exchange underscores a growing trend of defense cooperation between Ukraine and its regional partners, pairing legacy platforms with advanced Ukrainian drone and battlefield technologies developed during the war.

Earlier, Polish President Karol Nawrocki confirmed that Poland is ready to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for anti-air technologies.
