Polish President Karol Nawrocki confirmed that Poland is ready to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for other technologies.

This decision was announced during a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Poland on December 19.

Nawrocki emphasized that this decision does not contradict Poland's policy and will be finalized after resolving some formalities.

“After the unnecessary and unclear public uproar surrounding this issue—unfortunately, public opinion has been somewhat misinformed about this matter—we are seeking a symmetrical strategic partnership. This exchange of MiGs for anti-drone systems does not contradict our policy,” Nawrocki said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy added that Ukraine needs MiG-29 jets because Ukrainian pilots already have experience operating them.

Zelenskyy explained that retraining on F-16s takes years and temporarily removes experienced pilots from the battlefield. He also mentioned that, in contrast, MiG-29s would allow Ukraine to maintain its aviation's combat potential immediately. Nawrocki also noted that the issue of MiG-29s formally does not fall within his jurisdiction.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that if Ukraine does not receive the expected European Union funding in the spring, it will be forced to significantly reduce drone production.

Zelenskyy clarified that if the funding does not come through, Ukraine will have no choice but to scale back its drone production, which is a key priority, especially for its ongoing defense needs.

He emphasized that the funds, if received, would be used for either rebuilding Ukraine in the event of peace or, if the war continues, for essential priorities like drone production.
