Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has called on NATO and the European Union to consider intercepting Russian drones and missiles over Ukraine, following recent violations of Poland’s airspace.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on September 14, Sikorski said the West should “think about” such measures as a possible step toward strengthening collective defense.

“Technically, NATO and the EU would be capable of doing this, but it is not a decision Poland can make alone—it can only be made together with our allies,” he stressed.

The minister also warned of growing risks from Russia’s so-called shadow fleet operating in European waters. He proposed that Germany or NATO establish a maritime control zone in the North Sea to restrict the entry of aging Russian vessels into the Baltic.

“Two of these ships have already sunk in the Sea of Azov,” Sikorski noted. “If even one were to go down in the Baltic, we would be facing an environmental disaster of unprecedented scale.”

At the same time, Sikorski underlined that Warsaw does not see grounds to sever diplomatic relations with Moscow, despite ongoing tensions and recent drone incursions into Polish territory.

Speaking in Kyiv during a joint press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on September 12, he explained: “In diplomacy, communication channels are maintained not only with friends, but also with competitors and opponents.”

The minister added that Poland has already restricted the activities of Russian diplomats in certain regions and called on European Union partners to adopt similar measures to further limit Russia’s diplomatic footprint.

Earlier, NATO unveiled a new mission, Eastern Sentry, aimed at strengthening its eastern flank. The plan was presented in Brussels by Secretary General Mark Rutte during a joint press conference with Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich.
