Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Warsaw does not see grounds to sever diplomatic relations with Russia, despite ongoing tensions and recent drone incursions into Polish territory. He made the statement in Kyiv during a joint press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Hromadske reported on September 12.

“In diplomacy, communication channels are maintained not only with friends, but also with competitors and opponents,” Sikorski noted, stressing that Warsaw intends to preserve limited diplomatic engagement.

He added that Poland has already curtailed the activities of Russian diplomats in certain regions and urged European Union partners to take similar steps to reduce Russia’s diplomatic presence.

The minister also commented on the drone incursion from Belarus into Polish airspace overnight on September 10, when 19 unmanned aerial vehicles entered Polish territory. The drones remained for around seven hours.

“This was a moment of truth. Those who say these drones came from Ukraine are repeating Russian propaganda,” Sikorski said. He underscored that the episode confirmed Russia’s unwillingness to seek peace or a ceasefire.

At the same briefing, Sikorski announced that Poland will strengthen defense cooperation with Kyiv, pledging an additional 40 million euros (about $43 million) in aid. “We are ready to intensify our military cooperation with Ukraine,” he said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha thanked Warsaw for its support and stressed the importance of coordinated efforts against Russian threats.

Earlier, it was reported that US and EU officials called Russia’s overnight drone barrage into Poland a deliberate violation, with “most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began.”
