Portugal Signals Readiness to Join European Peacekeeping Mission in Ukraine

Portugal is considering deploying its military personnel to Ukraine as part of a European peacekeeping mission, contingent upon a ceasefire between the conflicting parties, according to Defense Minister Nuno Melo in an interview with Renascença radio on March 13.
Melo emphasized that such a deployment would only occur under a formal ceasefire agreement. He stated, “We are prepared to contribute to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, provided there is a cessation of hostilities.”
The composition and framework of a potential European peacekeeping mission in Ukraine are currently under discussion.
Several European nations have expressed willingness to send their military forces to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.
For instance, Germany’s German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius indicated openness to deploying German soldiers to Ukraine in support of a peace deal, asserting that Germany would back initiatives promoting lasting peace in the region.
Similarly, Denmark expressed readiness to contribute troops to a potential European peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, with Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stating that Denmark is prepared to send forces if necessary, depending on the situation’s development.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that his country was considering all possible options for supporting peace in Ukraine, including the potential deployment of Canadian troops.
