President Zelenskyy Signs Law Recognizing Ukrainians Deported From Poland in 1944–1951

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law officially recognizing as deported those Ukrainian citizens who were forcibly relocated from Polish territory to the Soviet Union between 1944 and 1951.
The information was published on the Verkhovna Rada’s official website under bill No. 2038 on July 29.
The law acknowledges the victims of the so-called “population exchange” between the Ukrainian SSR and the Polish People’s Republic—a policy implemented by the authorities of the former USSR and communist Poland.

The document defines the legal status of deported individuals and their descendants, guarantees state support including social benefits and access to healthcare, and affirms the state’s obligation to preserve the historical memory of these deportations. It also provides for compensation and social guarantees for the deported persons and their families, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Iryna Herashchenko stated.
According to Liga.net, the Ukrainian government now has six months to align its regulations with the new law.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Parliament adopted a landmark law officially recognizing Ukrainian citizens and their descendants who were forcibly relocated between 1944 and 1951 from areas that were then part of Poland.
