Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow has yet to receive any reply to Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s proposal to allocate $1 billion from Russian assets frozen in the United States to fund the work of the US-initiated “Board of Peace.”

According to The Moscow Times on February 9, Putin first outlined the idea on January 21. More than $5 billion in Russian central bank assets remain frozen in the US.

“The issue of the Board of Peace itself continues to be worked on, in accordance with the Russian president’s instructions, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with our allies and partners,” Peskov said.

US President Donald Trump announced plans to establish the “Board of Peacel” under his leadership to administer Gaza following the end of the war between Israel and Hamas. The body’s mandate was later broadened to include efforts to resolve conflicts in other regions.

As reported by The Moscow Times, on January 16, Trump said he had invited several dozen world leaders, including Putin, to join the council. Peskov later said the Kremlin was “studying all the details of this proposal.”

Putin subsequently stated that Russia was prepared to immediately provide the $1 billion required for permanent membership in the council, even before a final decision on participation was made.

“The remaining funds from our own assets frozen in the United States could also be used to restore territories affected by hostilities after the conclusion of a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine,” Putin said. Peskov later clarified that this would require the frozen assets to be unfrozen first.

Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed renewed French attempts to restore direct contacts between Paris and Moscow, calling the initiative unserious shortly after a senior aide to French President Emmanuel Macron held talks in the Russian capital.

Speaking to state broadcaster Russia Today, Lavrov said Macron had once again indicated, around two weeks earlier, that he planned to call Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
