Ukraine Didn’t Attack on Russian Intelligence General Alekseyev, MFA Confirms

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has denied allegations that Kyiv was involved in the recent assassination attempt on Russian military intelligence official Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev.
In a statement to Reuters, Sybiha said Ukraine had “nothing to do with the attack” on the deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence service.

His comments come in response to claims from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who accused Ukraine of orchestrating the attempted killing to undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
According to Reuters, Lavrov argued that the motive behind the attack was to derail any potential peace negotiations—a line echoed in state media coverage within Russia.
On February 6, Russian media reported that Alekseyev was shot multiple times in the back near his residence on Volokolamsk Highway in Moscow. He was hospitalized in critical condition. The assailant reportedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on February 8 that a suspect had been apprehended in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to Moscow. According to the FSB, the man—identified as 65-year-old Russian national Liubomyr Korba—was the “direct perpetrator” of the attack.
Russian authorities allege that Korba, originally from Ukraine’s Ternopil region, entered Moscow in December 2025 on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence.
The FSB also released surveillance footage showing an individual discarding an object in the snow and departing via public transportation. A Makarov pistol with a suppressor and three rounds was reportedly recovered at the site.
Additional suspects have also been named. Russian citizen Viktor Vasin was detained in Moscow, while a woman, Zinaida Serebrytska, is believed to have fled to Ukraine. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a case, and efforts to locate the alleged organizers are ongoing.
The FSB has not released any evidence linking the suspects to the attempted assassination. Claims made by the FSB and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov could not be independently confirmed.
Earlier, a car bomb detonated in southern Moscow, killing a senior Russian military official. Initial reports said the officer suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and fractures and was in critical condition. Later, Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that the target of the attack—Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov—died from his injuries.
