Putin Says Russia Is Ready to Mediate With Israel and Iran in Separate Regional Conflicts

The Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, held separate phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and said Moscow was willing to mediate to help de-escalate tensions surrounding Iran, according to Reuters on January 16.
The Kremlin said that Putin told Netanyahu Russia was ready to “continue its mediation efforts and to promote constructive dialogue with the participation of all interested states,” and outlined ideas for strengthening stability in the Middle East.

The Kremlin said Pezeshkian briefed Putin on what it called Tehran’s “sustained efforts” to normalize the situation inside Iran and that the two leaders reaffirmed their countries’ strategic partnership and plans for joint economic projects.
Asked what support Russia could provide, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said: “Russia is already assisting not only to Iran but also to the entire region, and to the cause of regional stability and peace.”
The calls came as Iran faces protests that erupted on December 28 over inflation and economic hardship, with the Kremlin condemning US President Donald Trump’s threats of new military strikes after Tehran cracked down on the unrest.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which includes Russia, China, India, and Iran, said it opposed external interference in Iran and blamed foreign sanctions for worsening economic conditions that fed the unrest.
Earlier, it was reported that Bloomberg described Moscow weighing a reduced commitment to Iran in pursuit of closer ties with Donald Trump, while also noting Venezuela’s frustration after the operation that led to Nicolás Maduro’s capture.
