Rare Russian “Piroyed” EW System Destroyed—One of Few Spotted on Frontlines

Ukrainian forces have destroyed a rare Russian electronic warfare system known as “Piroyed” —a low-cost, mobile jamming unit designed to protect Russian troops from Ukrainian FPV and small reconnaissance drones, according to Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces on July 21.
The strike took place in the past 24 hours during ongoing combat operations. In addition to the EW system, Ukrainian troops eliminated 18 Shahed-131/136 attack drones, 45 Russian personnel, two tanks, nine artillery pieces, and dozens of vehicles, UAVs, and fortifications.
The Piroyed has been described by military experts as a “trench EW system”—a compact, mobile jamming station meant to counter Ukraine’s growing reliance on FPV suicide drones.
It reportedly operates in multiple frequency ranges—including 900 MHz, 1.2 GHz, 1.5 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5.8 GHz—with an output power of 20 to 40 watts.

Ukrainian military analyst Serhiy Beskrestnov, also known as “Serhiy Flash,” noted that the unit’s antenna configuration creates more of a shield than a protective dome. “The ‘Piroyed’ may be effective at a range of 15 to 50 meters, but it doesn’t guarantee full protection from FPV drones,” he wrote.
The system is powered by a 12-volt battery with roughly 40 minutes of runtime, though it can also operate from a generator, vehicle battery, or wall outlet. It comes with a 10-meter remote activation cable and reportedly costs around $3,000 — significantly cheaper than many commercial drones it’s meant to counter.
While its specs suggest limited effectiveness, analysts believe Russia is attempting to scale mass production of such low-cost jamming units in hopes of compensating for their shortcomings.
Earlier, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces destroyed a rare Russian remote mining system, known as “Zemledelie,” using FPV drones.
