Resident of Occupied Crimea, 50, Faces Russian Court After Social Media Comment

A 50-year-old man from Kerch, in the temporary occupied Crimea, is facing trial in a Russian court for a comment he made on social media, as reported by the Crimea.Realities project of Radio Svoboda on September 17.
Russian authorities claim the man justified an attack on the Russian president’s residence in the Kremlin. The Crimean prosecutor’s office, which operates under Russian control, confirmed the allegations.
“Russian security services identified a citizen born in 1975 who, using a pseudonym, posted a comment on a Telegram community page, publicly supporting the drone attack on the Russian president’s residence in the Kremlin,” Russian state agency RIA Novosti stated.

The man’s computer was seized, and he was arrested. The case will be heard by the Southern Military District Court in Rostov-on-Don.
Crimea.Realities highlights that human rights advocates anticipate an increase in cases related to treason, collaboration, and espionage, with the Russian authorities reportedly initiating such cases on a near-daily basis.
Before 2014, there were fewer than 10 such cases annually, but since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the charge of treason has become one of the most commonly used against those opposed to the war.
Previously, it was reported that Russian authorities have opened a new criminal case against French political scientist Laurent Vinatier, escalating charges against him from collecting military-related information without registering as a “foreign agent” to espionage.
