Romania Deploys Jets as Russian Drones Target Ukrainian Danube Ports

On the night of August 20, Romania scrambled fighter jets in response to a Russian drone attack targeting regions of Ukraine, the country’s Ministry of National Defense announced in an official statement.
According to the ministry, two German Air Force Typhoon jets were deployed to monitor the situation. The aircraft patrolled the airspace along Romania’s border with Ukraine, focusing on northern Tulcea County. The operation was launched after Romania’s air surveillance system detected groups of drones fired by Russia toward Ukrainian ports on the Danube.
“During the mission, no intrusion of any aircraft into national airspace was detected. The jets returned to base and landed safely at 01:10,” the statement said.
The ministry emphasized that the deployment of allied aircraft is part of Romania’s broader security measures aimed at preventing spillover risks from Russia’s continued strikes on Ukraine. The Danube region, which lies directly along the Romanian border, has faced repeated attacks as Moscow targets Ukraine’s ports.

Romania had already taken similar action earlier this month. On the night of August 5–6, the Ministry of Defense reported that two F-16 fighter jets were deployed after Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region.
According to the ministry, the strikes targeted civilian infrastructure in the Izmail area near the Romanian border. Radar systems detected aerial targets close to Tulcea County, and at 01:10 local residents in the north of the county were warned through the RO-Alert system.
Earlier, an unidentified drone crashed and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland overnight, raising fresh concerns about spillover from Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Poland’s Armed Forces said no airspace violations were detected, but Rzeczpospolita reported, citing unnamed sources, that the wreckage resembled a Shahed-131 or Shahed-136—Iranian-made suicide drones widely used by Russia in strikes on Ukraine.
