Romania Scrambles F-16 Jets After Russian Drone Attack on Ukraine’s Odesa Region

Romania deployed fighter aircraft overnight on December 26 in response to a Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region.

According to the ministry, two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base in Fetesti were scrambled at 1:05 a.m. to monitor the airspace near the Romanian–Ukrainian border, specifically in the northern part of Tulcea County.
Romania’s air surveillance systems detected groups of drones launched by Russia toward Ukrainian ports along the Danube. At 1:23 a.m., residents in northern Tulcea County were issued air raid alerts as a precaution.
The Defense Ministry said no violations of Romanian airspace were recorded during the operation. The fighter jets completed the mission and returned safely to base at 3:15 a.m.

On December 26 Russian troops carried out another overnight drone strike on Ukraine’s Odesa region, hitting several locations, including the city of Odesa, according to the Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Oleh Kiper.
Kiper said attack drones targeted the Izmail and Odesa districts as well as the regional capital, causing new damage to energy and port infrastructure.
He added that the strikes sparked fires and damaged administrative buildings, and that there were no reports of any fatalities or injuries.
Earlier, on December 25, Russian forces launched overnight attacks on port and industrial sites in Ukraine’s Odesa region, killing one person, injuring two others, and causing emergency power outages in the regional capital.
