The Kremlin has claimed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been invited to join a new US-backed “Board of Peace” for Gaza proposed by US President Donald Trump, though the assertion has not been confirmed by Washington, Kyiv Independent reported, citing Russian media of January 19.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow had received such an invitation and was studying the proposal, Russian media reported. US officials have not commented on the claim.

According to US and media reporting, the proposed Board of Peace would oversee implementation of a 20-point ceasefire deal that the United States says it brokered between Israel and Hamas last October.

Several countries, including India, Canada, Turkey, Argentina, and Hungary, have publicly acknowledged receiving invitations, Kyiv Independent wrote.

A draft charter seen by Bloomberg suggests that countries would need to pay $1 billion to secure a permanent seat on the board, while other members would serve renewable terms of up to three years.

Trump is expected to act as the board’s inaugural chair, a move critics say could amount to creating a US-led alternative to the United Nations.

If Russia were to join such a body, it would do so while continuing its full-scale war against Ukraine. Trump has sought to engage Putin diplomatically on ending the war, but those efforts have so far failed to produce a ceasefire, with Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities intensifying over the winter, Kyiv Independent wrote.

The Financial Times has reported that US officials are considering expanding the remit of the Gaza Board of Peace to other conflicts, including Ukraine.

Alongside it, an Executive Board made up of senior Trump aides and foreign figures would focus on Gaza’s transition “from conflict to peace and development,” according to the White House.

Vladimir Putin also held separate phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier, and said Moscow was willing to mediate to help de-escalate tensions surrounding Iran.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his negotiating team had delivered a detailed briefing on talks with the US side and that he had instructed officials to finalize a document on US security guarantees for Ukraine for review at the highest level.
