Russia Deploys Kim Jong Un’s M-1991 Rocket System—Ukraine Blows It Up Again

Ukrainian unmanned aerial units have destroyed a North Korean–made M-1991 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) in Russian-occupied territory, marking the second confirmed strike against this platform since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
According to a statement by Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Armed Forces Unmanned Systems (SBS), the strike was part of a broader drone campaign conducted between January 17 and 19. The M-1991, a 240mm heavy rocket artillery system manufactured by North Korea, was among several high-value Russian targets hit during this window.
The destruction was confirmed in visual documentation shared via SBS-affiliated channels, although the precise location of the M-1991 strike was not disclosed. The first confirmed Ukrainian attack against an M-1991 occurred on June 26, 2025.
Ukrainian SBS units also targeted a 9A84 launcher vehicle associated with Russia’s S-300V surface-to-air missile system. Imagery suggests the destroyed unit may alternatively be a 9A82 variant, as it appeared to be carrying only two missile containers. The strike occurred in Russian-occupied Luhansk region.
In addition to air defense assets, SBS drones struck several critical infrastructure nodes supporting Russian logistics and military operations. Targets included:
Traction power substation “Sartana” near Mariupol, which supports railway operations in the Mariupol–Donetsk corridor. A 2,500 kVA transformer was reported destroyed;
Substation “Karan” near occupied Andriivka, servicing a key section of electrified railway. Two transformers with capacities between 2,500 and 4,000 kVA were hit;
Substation “Azovska” (220 kV) near Starobesheve in occupied Donetsk, described as a strategic industrial power node supporting Russia’s defense industry.

Drone units also destroyed UAV storage depots in two locations: one belonging to Russia’s 144th Division of the 51st Army in Novokrasnianka (Luhansk region), and another unidentified drone warehouse in occupied Donetsk.
The operations were carried out by multiple SBS formations, including the 1st Independent Center, the 412th Nemesis Brigade, and the Kairos Battalion of the 414th “Madyar’s Birds” Brigade. Coordination was also reported with Ukraine’s newly formed Deep Strike Center under the broader SBS command.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Security Service reported that special operations units destroyed or disabled over $4 billion worth of Russian air defense assets in 2025, including S-300, S-350, and S-400 systems, as well as critical radar infrastructure such as Nebo-M, Podlet, and 92N6 arrays. The strikes opened corridors for long-range drone missions deep into Russian-held territory.
