Russia Launches Ballistic Missile Strike on Ukrainian Training Base, Casualties Reported

Russia launched a mass combined strike across Ukraine that included two ballistic missiles targeting a training unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces located in the country’s rear, Operational Command “South” said on October 16.
“In the morning of October 16, Russia carried out a massive combined strike on Ukraine, including two ballistic missiles at the territory of one of the training units of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, located in the rear and relatively calm part of our country,” the command reported, adding that emergency services are working on site and an internal probe has been opened by the Military Law and Order Service on the order of the Commander-in-Chief.
“Despite alerts, movement to shelters and other safety measures, it was not possible to completely avoid losses,” the statement said.
The military did not specify which unit was hit or where it was located, describing only that it was positioned in a rear, relatively calm area of the country.
The strike follows earlier Russian attacks on Ukrainian training areas this year. On July 30, Ukrainian authorities said a training unit was hit with two Iskander missiles, while in late September the Ground Forces reported another ballistic strike on a training unit that caused casualties; in both cases, officials provided limited location details.
Earlier, it was reported that a combined Russian attack hit a Ukrainian Army training unit with two Iskander ballistic missiles, causing casualties despite sheltering measures and prompting emergency response at the site.
