Russia Launches One of Its Deadliest Overnight Strikes on Ukraine in Weeks, Killing Six Including Two Children

Ukraine was rocked by one of Russia’s deadliest overnight assaults in weeks, as waves of missiles and drones tore through cities across the country, killing six people—including two children—and injuring dozens more, according to officials. The strikes sparked massive fires in Kyiv, reduced homes to rubble, and plunged thousands into darkness amid Moscow’s escalating campaign against Ukraine’s energy grid.
Ukraine came under one of Russia’s most intense overnight attacks in recent weeks, with missiles and drones striking multiple cities and energy infrastructure across the country, killing at least six people—including two children—and injuring dozens more, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service (SES) on October 22.
Kyiv was hit by a combined drone and missile barrage that triggered fires and explosions in several districts.
Four people were killed in the capital, and 25 were injured, including five children. Fires broke out in Pecherskyi and Desnianskyi districts, where homes and gas stations sustained heavy damage.
In the village of Pohreby near Brovary, debris from a Russian strike set homes ablaze, killing a 36-year-old woman, her six-month-old baby, and a 12-year-old girl.
“The terrorist state killed a young woman born in 1987, a six-month-old baby, and a 12-year-old girl,” said Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Administration.

Authorities also confirmed the death of a 37-year-old man in the Brovary district after being struck by falling debris.
In total, rescue teams reported multiple fires in residential areas, including one in Brovary that engulfed a truck and trailer. An 83-year-old woman was pulled from a burning house in shock but survived.
In Zaporizhzhia, at least 13 people were wounded and more than 2,000 residents were left without electricity after the attacks.
The Dnipropetrovsk region reported infrastructure damage and the downing of 42 drones.
In the Odesa region, strikes hit Izmail, damaging the port and energy facilities.
Attacks were also recorded in the Poltava region, where oil and gas infrastructure suffered damage.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, saying they proved once again that “Russia does not feel enough pressure for dragging out the war.” He said air defense forces worked “all night and into the morning” defending cities under fire.
“Ordinary cities have been under fire, primarily our energy infrastructure, but many residential buildings have also been hit,” Zelenskyy said. “Unfortunately, six people were killed, among them two children.”
He urged international partners to increase sanctions and accelerate weapons deliveries. “Russian words about diplomacy mean nothing as long as the Russian leadership does not feel critical problems. This can be ensured only through sanctions, long-range capabilities, and coordinated diplomacy,” he said, calling on the European Union, the United States, and the G7 to act decisively.
Instead of diplomacy and peace negotiations, Russia continues its brutal strikes against Ukraine. Energy infrastructure and ordinary homes all across our country have been under attack overnight.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also denounced Moscow’s attacks as “brutal strikes against Ukraine” and urged the West to provide emergency energy support before winter.
“Instead of diplomacy and peace negotiations, Russia continues its brutal strikes,” he wrote. “We need additional energy resources, repair equipment, and air defense capabilities. This is urgent.”
Sybiha said the strikes demonstrated that “Russia still doesn’t feel sufficient pressure that could force it to end the war,” adding: “It is time to abandon wishful thinking and demonstrate strength.”
Earlier, a Russian drone strike targeted a civilian area in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, injuring at least 12 people and causing significant damage to vehicles and residential buildings.
