Since the beginning of the full-scale war, nearly 12,000 cases of Russian forces using dangerous chemicals have been documented, with 6,540 of those cases occurring in 2025 alone, according to the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Support Forces Command on Facebook on December 19.
"The highest number of chemical attacks by the Russians occurred in April 2025, with the Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Reconnaissance Units of the Ukrainian Support Forces recording 894 instances of dangerous chemicals being used against Ukrainian Defense Forces personnel," the report said.

It was further noted that throughout 2025, Russian forces, alongside traditional means of fire-based damage, frequently used special munitions containing irritant chemical substances. Specifically, the enemy predominantly utilized K-51 and RG-VO gas grenades filled with CS and CN chemicals, typically used for riot control.
The Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces of the Ukrainian Support Forces continue to monitor instances of dangerous chemical substance usage, collecting samples for forensic analysis, according to the command.

Additionally, under Article 1, Paragraph 5 of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the use of such substances as a weapon of war is prohibited. CS and CN chemicals are officially used by law enforcement in several countries exclusively in peacetime for managing mass unrest, subject to strict compliance with established norms and restrictions.
These chemicals are not classified as lethal chemical warfare agents, nor are they aggressive solvents for equipment or personal protective gear, and they are not meant to cause immediate fatal damage.

"However, in combat conditions, the use of CS and CN is both illegal and dangerous. Their use on the battlefield is intended to temporarily incapacitate soldiers, violates international law, and endangers the lives and health of Ukrainian Defense Forces personnel," emphasized the Support Forces Command.
Furthermore, these substances cause severe irritation to the eyes and respiratory system, resulting in tearing, coughing, suffocation, disorientation, and temporary loss of combat effectiveness.
Earlier, a recent investigation revealed that a Russian state-affiliated institute, connected to the production of chemical weapons, continues to acquire essential components for prohibited munitions, despite extensive international sanctions, according to the report.
