Russia has reportedly modified its Yak-52B2 light aircraft to intercept Ukrainian long-range drones.

According to Russian media, the aircraft is now equipped with a PEGRAM S400 optical-electronic surveillance system for 360-degree drone detection, a redesigned cockpit, and a 12-mm Saiga-12 automatic shotgun mounted for aerial drone defense.

Ukraine has also previously used Yak-52s for air defense purposes, though not with the same level of technical modification.

The Yak-52B2 is a Russian-modified version of the Soviet-era Yakovlev Yak-52, a light, propeller-driven aircraft originally developed in the late 1970s as a trainer for military pilots.

While the original Yak-52 was never designed for combat, the B2 variant is an improvised adaptation aimed at giving the aircraft limited counter-drone capabilities.

Earlier, it was reported that the Ruta missile drone, currently used by Ukraine and capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) away, is set to receive a new navigation system designed to operate independently of GPS and electronic warfare.
