Russian troops carried out a large-scale drone assault on Zaporizhzhia overnight on January 2, damaging dozens of buildings and igniting a fire at a shopping center.

This was reported by Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov on Telegram.

“Throughout the New Year holidays, the enemy did not stop attacking Zaporizhzhia and its suburbs. Last night saw one of the most massive drone attacks,” Fedorov said.

He noted that air defense units intercepted and destroyed a large number of enemy drones before they reached the city, which helped avoid civilian injuries.

However, Russian forces still managed to strike Zaporizhzhia nine times using drones. Residential buildings, commercial properties, and infrastructure facilities were affected.

By morning, authorities recorded damage to dozens of residential buildings and business premises.

“The enemy once again tried to strike energy infrastructure last night, but as of this morning all subscribers in the region have electricity,” the regional governor added.

The State Emergency Service (SES) reported that Russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia with strike drones in two separate waves overnight.

The first wave occurred late on January 1, triggering three fires. A non-residential extension of a high-rise building and two utility structures caught fire, while falling debris damaged nearby homes, roads, and vehicles.

The second attack took place around 2:00 a.m. on January 2, when a shopping center was set on fire. Emergency responders quickly extinguished the blaze, and SES sappers examined the area for hazardous drone fragments. No casualties were reported.

Earlier, Russian troops attacked an ambulance with a drone in Kherson on January 1, damaging the vehicle and injuring its driver.

According to officials, the strike occurred at around 10:00 p.m. as the emergency medical crew was traveling to the Dniprovskyi district to provide aid to wounded civilians when the drone attack took place.
