Russia to Open Helicopter Maintenance Hub in Peru Amid Latin American Expansion

Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has announced plans to open a helicopter maintenance and repair center in Peru, The Defense Post reported on April 22.
According to company director Alexander Mikheev, the new facility is expected to become operational “in the near future.”
The center will provide support for the upkeep and airworthiness of Russian-made helicopters currently in service across Latin America. While the exact location and timeline have not been disclosed, the initiative signals Moscow’s push to strengthen its foothold in the region’s defense sector.
Peru’s armed forces operate a variety of Russian-designed helicopters, including the Mi-2, Mi-8, Mi-17, and Mi-171 models. The country’s air force also fields the Mi-35 attack helicopter.

Rosoboronexport’s expansion plans will be featured at an upcoming defense exhibition in Peru this April. The Russian delegation will showcase several of its aircraft, including Mi-17 helicopters, MiG-35 and Su-35 fighter jets, and the Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft.
Also on display will be Russian-made drones such as the Orlan, Orion, and the loitering munition UAV known as “KUB.”
Despite its use of Russian military equipment, Peru also operates systems sourced from Europe, the United States, and Asia, reflecting a diversified defense strategy.
Earlier, reports emerged that Russia intensified its activities in Libya following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, an event that has jeopardized Moscow’s military foothold in Syria, particularly its bases in Hmeimim and Tartus.
