Ukrainian National Guard drone operators struck a major blow against Russian air defenses in the Zaporizhzhia region, destroying an S-300V surface-to-air missile system along with a 9S36 radar station used for target tracking and missile guidance.

The strike was confirmed by Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, who also released photos of the aftermath on September 3.

The attack took place near the village of Oleksiivka in the Polohy district. Footage shows Ukrainian drone operators spotting a Russian launcher with two transport-launch containers on a roadway before striking it with precision munitions.

The reported value of the destroyed launcher is estimated at around $40 million.

The 9S36 radar station—part of Russia’s Buk-M2 and Buk-M3 air defense systems—was also destroyed. According to its manufacturer, the station can elevate its antenna mast up to 22 meters, enabling detection and engagement of low-flying targets even in forests or uneven terrain. It is capable of simultaneously tracking and targeting up to four aerial threats.

The Ukrainian Lasar’s Group UAV unit of the 27th Pechersk Brigade carried out the operation using a heavy bomber drone. According to Andriushchenko, the strike triggered such a massive detonation of the S-300V’s ammunition that the drone itself was likely lost, with the video cutting out abruptly after the explosion.

“This was a fat target,” Andriushchenko noted, highlighting the importance of the destroyed system to Russia’s air defense network in southern Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukraine conducted a successful strike on a Russian 91N6E radar system, part of the S-400 Triumph air defense network in temporarily occupied Crimea.

The S-400 Triumph, a state-of-the-art air defense system, is valued at around $1.2 billion and is capable of intercepting a wide range of aerial threats, from cruise missiles to drones and fighter jets.
