Russian Colony Officials Identified as Suspects in Mass Killing of Ukrainian POWs in Olenivka

Authors

Significant progress has been made in the investigation into the Olenivka prison massacre. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine has identified key figures involved in the mass killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka. On the night of July 29, 2022, a catastrophic explosion at the former Volnovakha Penal Colony No. 120 in occupied Olenivka resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war, with around 150 others suffering injuries.

The explosions occurred between 11:00 PM on July 28 and 1:00 AM on July 29. At the time, the barracks housed 193 POWs from the Azov Brigade. Initial findings reveal that 41 individuals died instantly, while 9 additional fatalities were attributed to delays in medical care. Approximately 150 soldiers sustained injuries of varying severity.

The investigation, which involved 48 forensic examinations and molecular genetic analyses, has confirmed the identities of 49 victims. Despite the Geneva Conventions protecting POWs, international organizations were barred from inspecting the site, and efforts were made to destroy evidence of the crime.

Authorities have now issued suspicions against the head and first deputy of the Volnovakha Penal Colony for violations of war laws and customs. Evidence indicates that following the explosion, the accused deliberately delayed medical assistance and evacuation, resulting in additional deaths.

The Office of the Prosecutor General remains committed to pursuing justice, ensuring that all individuals responsible act are held accountable.
