Russian Drone Strike Hits Leading Confectionery Factory in Sumy Region, Killing One

On the morning of April 18, three Russian drones targeted a civilian industrial facility in the city of Sumy, according to local officials. The strike resulted in one fatality and one injury.
Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar confirmed that the attack involved three Shahed-type UAVs, which struck a confectionery facility known for producing baked goods, including traditional Easter bread.
Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office stated that the target was a leading manufacturer of bakery and confectionery products in the region.

The attack destroyed part of the facility’s infrastructure and disabled its utilities. All three drones hit the same building, causing significant structural damage, including the collapse of the roof.
Authorities identified the victim as a 61-year-old entrepreneur who had arrived to pick up products. A 55-year-old bakery employee was also injured and received medical treatment.
Emergency services recovered the victim’s body from beneath the rubble. The Prosecutor’s Office has launched a pre-trial investigation under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine concerning violations of the laws and customs of war resulting in death.
The attack occurred around 5:00 AM local time. Photos from the scene show damage to the factory building and parked vehicles.

Earlier, Russian forces launched a missile strike on Kharkiv using Iskander ballistic missiles reportedly armed with cluster munitions. The attack hit residential areas in the Osnovianskyi district, killing one elderly man and injuring over 67 people, including several children.
Authorities confirmed damage to more than 50 apartment buildings and over 30 vehicles. Rescue operations are ongoing.
