Russian Jet Bombs Its Own City Again—Massive Explosion Rocks Belgorod, Causes Power Outages

An accidental bombing by a Russian fighter jet caused a significant explosion and widespread power outages in Russian border city of Belgorod on December 6, The Moscow Times reported, citing Russian media.

According to local reports, an aviation bomb inadvertently released from the aircraft struck near an electrical substation on Storozhevaya Street, leaving parts of the city and its suburbs in the dark. Residents reported hearing the roar of a jet heading toward the border just before the blast, noting that no air raid sirens or drone warnings were active at the time, which points to an internal accident rather than an external attack.

Regional authorities confirmed the damage but used vague language to describe the cause. The local governor stated that an “unidentified munition” caused the blast, which left a visible crater and damaged a truck and nearby homes. One man was hospitalized with barotrauma, and traffic lights and electricity supply were disrupted across the city center, according to The Moscow Times.

This incident shows a persistent issue for the Russian military. Independent journalists calculate that this is at least the 133rd time this year that Russian aircraft have dropped munitions on their own territory or temporarily Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. This pattern of “friendly fire” accidents follows a similar trend from last year, when at least 165 such bombs were recorded falling on border regions.

Previously, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense (HUR), published a new intercepted call in which a resident of the border area describes fires at local infrastructure sites and admits that some of the strikes were caused by Russia’s own aircraft.

“Over 11 days, Russian bombers dropped eight bombs—eight bombs—on the territory of Belgorod region. Can you imagine?” the woman says in the recording.
