The Su-27UB is a two-seat variant of the Su-27, a Soviet-designed, fourth-generation, all-weather, supersonic air superiority fighter.
While originally developed for air dominance missions, the Su-27 can also be equipped for ground-attack roles, including delivery of tactical nuclear munitions.
The platform serves as the basis for several aircraft types currently in service with the Russian Air Force and other countries, including the Su-30, Su-33, Su-34, and Su-35.
According to open-source data, Su-27-series aircraft are among the most numerous combat aircraft in the Russian fleet and ranked third globally in terms of quantity as of 2019.
Earlier, on June 7, Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet over the Kursk region in what was described as a successful operation along the Kursk axis. The Su-35 is one of Russia’s most advanced and expensive non-stealth aircraft, with an estimated cost of up to $100 million.
