Spain Prepares First-Ever Civil Defense Plan Amid Growing European Security Concerns
The Spanish authorities are preparing their first-ever national civil defense plan, designed to address potential scenarios in which war reaches Spanish territory, 20minutos reports.
According to the publication citing sources in Spain's Ministry of Interior, the civil defense plan in case of a war threat is part of Spain's Second National Civil Defense Strategy, a five-year initiative approved by the National Security Council on October 15.
For the first time, the strategy includes "the threat of war" in the list of emergency situations covered by civil protection. It also calls for the development of "specific plans," which are currently underway.
With this move, Spain follows the example of other European countries, such as Finland, Norway, and Sweden, which have already begun distributing leaflets to their citizens with basic recommendations on what to do in the event of war.
While "war risk" is not yet a state priority for Spain due to its geopolitical position, the National Security Council has added it to the list of potential catastrophes and emergencies covered by the National Directorate of Civil Protection.
Meanwhile, Germany is reportedly bracing for a potential war scenario. The plan, known as “Operation Deutschland,” details how Berlin could support the deployment of up to 800,000 NATO troops, including US forces, to Ukraine in response to escalating nuclear threats from Russia.
