Spain Will Support Ukraine Through NATO’s PURL Arms Program, PM Sánchez Confirms

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Madrid will officially join a NATO initiative, called PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List), dedicated to the joint procurement and delivery of American weaponry for Ukraine.
According to Euroactive on October 23, Sánchez confirmed the decision ahead of the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels, stating Spain's deep alignment with Western alliances and support for Kyiv.
He emphasized that Spain is “a country committed to the Atlantic Alliance and undoubtedly also committed to defending and supporting Ukraine at all levels.”
The Prime Minister noted that his government had been evaluating the alliance’s program for some time.
“We have been studying, logically, what joint purchases we can make during all these weeks since the NATO initiative was launched,” Sánchez stated.

As reported by Euroactive, his remarks follow hours after US President Donald Trump once again publicly criticized Spain’s low defense spending commitments. Spain’s move to participate in the joint military procurement scheme solidifies its practical role in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Spain’s decision was finalized following a phone call between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and a separate conversation between Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles and her Ukrainian counterpart, Denys Shmyhal on October 21.
According to El País, Ukrainian officials stressed the critical and urgent need for immediate arms deliveries to counter the Russian bombing campaign, which is currently destroying the nation's energy infrastructure ahead of the approaching winter.
Earlier, Italy indicated its willingness to financially support Ukraine's acquisition of US-manufactured weapons through the PURL mechanism.
