Stalin’s Writings to Feature in Russian Economics Textbook Rejecting “Only Democracies Prosper” Idea

Russia is preparing a new university-level economics textbook that will draw on Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s writings and challenge what its editor calls “myths” about democracy and protectionism, according to The Moscow Times on January 13.
Valery Fadeyev, chairman of Russia’s Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, stated that the 350–400 page book is titled “Essays on Economics and Economic Science” and could be introduced as early as the next academic year for non-specialist students, including sociologists, political scientists and historians.

He said the aim was “not to refute something, not to denounce liberalism,” adding: “Liberalism is simply too narrow. Our task is to show students the full breadth and complexity of life.”

Fadeyev also said the textbook would seek to rebut claims that protectionism is inherently harmful and that rising living standards occur only in democracies, telling: “That’s not true. If we look at economic history, it’s described in textbooks, including Western ones—economic growth has always happened in countries with a more or less strict regime.”
Earlier, it was reported that Switzerland canceled a planned screening of the Russian film Maidan: Road to War after Ukrainian diplomats and activists raised concerns over its promotion of Kremlin war propaganda.
