Sweden is stepping up its support for Ukraine, signaling a readiness to deepen military assistance through key initiatives like PURL and the fighter jet coalition.

Speaking ahead of a NATO defense ministers’ summit in Brussels, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson outlined Stockholm’s growing commitment to Kyiv’s defense, Ukrinform reported on October 15

“Sweden is ready to do more. We have prepared a second package together with Norway and Denmark. Sweden has allocated $264 million for this, and we are ready for further packages,” Jonson said.

He highlighted active discussions between Nordic and Baltic states on distributing the financial burden of supporting Ukraine’s resistance, calling this coordination “critically important” in light of a concerning decline in international aid.

“We want to see more steps taken to strengthen and increase financial and military support for Ukraine,” he emphasized, adding that Stockholm “does not rule out such a possibility” on its part.

Jonson confirmed that fighter jet coalition partners are urging Sweden to focus on enhancing Ukraine’s air capabilities—specifically by supplying radar reconnaissance and early warning aircraft  to support F-16 operations.

“We also do not rule out the possibility of [providing Ukraine with] Gripen aircraft. We are in dialogue with the Ukrainian side, which has shown strong interest in the Gripen,” Jonson said.

He clarified that Sweden’s immediate focus is delivering early warning aircraft, with discussions on Gripen jets to follow. While he acknowledged that operating F-16, Mirage, and Gripen aircraft simultaneously would be “a challenge” for Ukraine, Jonson underscored the strategic value of deploying Western fighters in Ukrainian skies.

“The work of Western fighter jets in Ukrainian airspace would significantly enhance Ukraine’s air defenses,” he concluded.

Earlier, it was reported that Sweden plans to allocate $367 million toward boosting its counter-drone capabilities from 2026 to 2028.

The investment will fund weapons systems capable of intercepting drones, enhanced protective measures for airbases, and electronic warfare (EW) tools tailored for both ground troops and military vehicles.
