Russian Geran-4 Drone Reaches 960 Km as Analysts Warn 96% of Ukraine Is Within Range

A Russian jet-powered drone flew approximately 960 kilometers from its launch point on August 28, setting a reported new range record for this type of UAV, according to Ukrainian OSINT analysts from the Oko Hora monitoring group.

The group identified the aircraft as a jet-powered Geran-4 drone. Although the system’s stated range is around 550 kilometers, analysts said operating at high altitude could significantly extend its flight distance.

“Despite the stated range of the jet-powered Geran-4 being around 550 kilometers, flying at an altitude of 5,000–7,000 meters makes it possible to double the range,” Oko Hora analysts said.

Based on the recorded flight, the analysts estimated that approximately 96% of Ukraine’s territory is within the potential operating range of Russian Geran-4 jet-powered drones.

The Geran-4 is a jet-powered variant of Russia’s Geran drone family, developed to achieve higher speeds and enhanced flight performance. According to open-source information, the UAV measures approximately 3.5 meters in length, has a wingspan of around three meters, and weighs about 450 kilograms at takeoff.

The drone is powered by a turbojet engine generating approximately 160 kilograms of thrust, providing considerably more power than the engine fitted to the earlier Geran-3.

The upgraded propulsion system reportedly allows the Geran-4 to reach cruising speeds of around 350–500 kilometers per hour, compared with approximately 280–330 kilometers per hour for previous variants. Its previously reported operational range was up to 850 kilometers, with a flight endurance of roughly two and a half hours and a warhead capacity of up to 50 kilograms.

The reported flight comes amid continued large-scale Russian drone attacks on Ukraine. On August 27, Russian forces repeatedly targeted Kyiv and the surrounding region, leaving the capital area under air raid alerts for more than 14 hours and forcing emergency crews to work under the threat of follow-up strikes, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES).
