Russia Ramps Up Geran-4/5 Drone Production to 3,000 Per Month, Ukraine’s Intelligence Says

Russia’s defense industry produces approximately 3,000 Geran-4/5 strike drones each month, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) told Militarnyi on August 12.

The use of these drone variants has become increasingly widespread as Russia improves their flight and technical characteristics, including capabilities intended to help them penetrate Ukrainian air defenses.

Serial production of the Geran-4/5 drones has been established at a facility in Yelabuga, within the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan.

Other Russian enterprises are also involved in the production process, supplying individual components and forming a broader manufacturing chain for the drones, according to Militarnyi.

The increased production of these variants comes as Russia’s military-industrial complex targets an overall output of 11,000 strike drones in August.

Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy chief of HUR, told RBC-Ukraine that the monthly production plan includes Geran-1, Geran-2, Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5 drones, as well as Harpy, Gerbera, Gerbera Strike, and Gerbera Seeker variants.

Skibitskyi noted that Russia reduced both drone production and the intensity of its attacks in July while restructuring its manufacturing capacity. The changes are aimed at increasing production of the turbojet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones.

Alongside the expansion of its drone arsenal, Russia is also redirecting resources within its ballistic missile production. Deputy chief added that Russia has increased ballistic missile output largely by suspending production of Kh-47 Kinzhal missiles, with rocket fuel previously allocated to the Kinzhal program now being redirected to other ballistic missile systems.
