There Is No Time for Ukraine Fatigue, Says Latvian President
In an interview with DW on October 16, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics urged the West to enhance its support for Kyiv in its fight against Russia and cautioned against fatigue in assisting Ukraine.
When asked about the fatigue regarding Ukraine and stalemate on the battlefield, Rinkevics said:
“My call would be: continue supporting Ukraine with all means, political, financial and military. Part of the stalemate is because there are restrictions of use of Western weapons by Ukraine against Russian legitimate military targets, and this kind of situation will be resolved only if countries supporting international law and Ukraine will somehow mobilize more support. There is no time and place for fatigue, otherwise we are going to see enormous negative consequences to regional and global security.”
“I think that we should not think that if we start ignoring the war it’s going to end. Indeed, there is a very difficult winter approaching Ukraine, it’s energy infrastructure is being targeted by Russia; and yes, one can agree that the situation on the battlefield is rather difficult, but I believe that we’re gonna see the movement after the US elections,” Rinkevics noted.
Earlier on October 1, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said speaking at a panel discussion at the Warsaw Security Forum that Ukraine will have the second-strongest military on the European continent within NATO once it joins the alliance. Lithuanian official noted Ukraine’s battle-hardened military and its “clear political commitment to be the best.”
