TIME Names Ukraine’s DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko a Global Climate Innovator

DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko has been named one of the world’s Top 100 leaders in climate transformation, according to the TIME100 Climate ranking published by TIME magazine on October 30.
TIME noted that the fight against the climate crisis is a central theme of this year’s TIME100 Climate list, which highlights influential leaders advancing business-driven climate action. The publication emphasized that decision-makers, executives, researchers, and innovators around the world are working to secure the funding and resources essential for achieving effective climate transformation.

Timchenko was included in the Innovators category for advancing distributed energy in Ukraine amid the ongoing war. Despite the challenges of wartime, DTEK is building Ukraine’s largest wind power plant and has already launched the country’s biggest energy storage system.
“Ukraine has learned, fast, that more decentralized forms of generation and distribution give us far greater resilience to attack. In an era of increasing global instability, governments and businesses around the world are starting to notice what’s going on in Ukraine. We are becoming a laboratory for the energy system of the future and I encourage people to come and see how we are making it happen,” Timchenko said.
He added that Ukraine possesses enormous potential for renewable energy generation, yet its installed capacity remains far below that of its western neighbors.

He emphasized that when private lenders are unwilling to take risks, it is up to partner governments and international financial institutions to step forward by implementing risk-sharing mechanisms and financial instruments that can attract private capital into clean energy. In Ukraine’s case, he noted, such investments would contribute not only to climate progress but also to enhancing Europe’s energy security.
Earlier, Ukrainian energy company DTEK and UK-based clean tech firm Octopus Energy Group unveiled RISE, a joint initiative aimed at equipping Ukrainian businesses and public institutions with rooftop solar panels and battery storage systems.
