Trump Envoy Kellog Rejects Putin’s Proposed May 9 Ceasefire as “Absurd”

Keith Kellogg, the US President’s special envoy to Ukraine, has dismissed Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, calling it “absurd.” Kellogg stated that any truce should last at least 30 days and involve comprehensive cessation of hostilities.
Speaking to Fox News, Kellogg emphasized that the United States had presented Ukraine with 22 specific steps aimed at ending the war, following what he described as direct and difficult negotiations.
While not all elements were welcomed by Ukraine, Kellogg noted that disagreements are a common part of diplomatic processes.
“The idea of a three-day ceasefire is absurd,” Kellogg said. “President Trump is seeking a full, comprehensive ceasefire — on land, in the air, at sea, and covering infrastructure — lasting at least 30 days, with the possibility of extension.”
He added that Ukraine has already agreed to this framework and that the next move must come from the Russian side.

Earlier, Putin announced a proposed ceasefire from midnight on May 8 until midnight on May 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations. The proposal was widely viewed as a limited measure rather than a step toward broader peace negotiations.
The Kremlin also rejected Ukraine’s call for a 30-day ceasefire, with Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov citing unresolved “nuances” as the reason for refusing a long-term truce.
Peskov claimed Russia remained open to negotiations without conditions, but criticized Ukraine for not responding to Moscow’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire from May 8 to May 10.
