Ukrainian MFA: If Russia Wants Peace, Ceasefire Must Start Now, Not on Victory Day

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, responded to the Kremlin’s announcement on April 28 of a three-day ceasefire dedicated to the Victory Day celebration.
“If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8th? If the fire can be ceased now and since any date for 30 days—so it is real, not just for a parade,” Sybiha said.
“Ukraine is ready to support a lasting, durable, and full ceasefire. And this is what we are constantly proposing, for at least 30 days.”

Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced on April 28 a ceasefire in Ukraine during the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
April 11 marked one month since Russia refused to accept a full interim ceasefire proposed by the United States. On March 11, Ukraine unconditionally agreed to the proposal in Jeddah, but Russia rejected it, instead demanding conditions.
During a press briefing on April 22, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the prospects of a potential ceasefire with Russia, affirming that Ukraine is prepared to enter negotiations with Russia in any format once a ceasefire is established.
