The United States is returning to the Moon to build a new missile defense system called Golden Dome. SpaceX and Blue Origin are now prioritizing Moon stations over previous goals, according to Defense Express on February 24.

Following a December 2025 order by President Donald Trump, the US is moving forward with a plan to return to the Moon by 2028 and build a base there by 2030. This plan is directly linked to the “Golden Dome,” a multi-billion-dollar project designed to create a total defense shield for the United States.

Experts believe the Moon is becoming a central part of global security. The Pentagon views it as a “high ground"—a perfect spot to place sensors and tools that monitor threats. Because the Moon is so far away, it is much harder for any enemy to reach or break the equipment placed there.

Current defense tools that fly close to Earth are easy to target or disable. By moving these systems to the Moon, the US makes its “Golden Dome” shield much stronger and more reliable.

By placing critical eyes on the Moon, the US ensures its defense shield remains active and out of reach from interference. This strategy moves the most important parts of the security network to a place where they cannot be easily touched.

SpaceX has already changed its plans. Elon Musk recently named the Moon, not Mars, as the company’s main goal for the next ten years. SpaceX plans to start active work on Moon base projects within the next five to seven years.

The Starship vehicle is the key to this plan, with three missions to the Moon already set for 2027. Experts say SpaceX is a top choice for contracts under the Golden Dome program, especially for the networks that support the defense shield.

Blue Origin has made similar moves, stopping its space tourism flights for at least two years. This allows the company to put all its resources into Moon development.

The company recently joined the SHIELD program, a $151 billion project that involves over 1,000 companies. Blue Origin is now building the Blue Moon landers, which are made to carry heavy equipment and supplies to the Moon.

The logistics behind this new space race depend on heavy-lift launch systems. SpaceX’s Starship is designed to carry up to 150 tons into orbit and can refuel in space, increasing the amount of cargo it can deliver to the Moon.

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which recently completed its first flight, is also expected to play a major role in transporting infrastructure to the surface of the Moon.

While the Moon’s exact military role remains unclear, growing coordination between government programs and private companies suggests a new phase of sustained activity on the Moon.

Earlier, Ukrainian company DroneUA, a resident of the Diia platform, began supplying robots to NASA for testing in Virginia. This partnership, launched by the US space agency, aimed to build long-term cooperation as Ukraine’s tech sector grew amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The company showcased the global potential of Ukrainian technology across land, sea, and aerospace sectors, following major milestones such as the first coordinated assault carried out solely with ground and aerial drones by the Khartiia Brigade on the Kharkiv front.
